Winters Excelsior Company opened for business in 1915 in McWilliams, Alabama when John Albert Winters turned a dying saw mill operation into a booming excelsior business.
Excelsior is a shaved, curled, wood fiber that entered the market at the original packaging and shipping material before loose-fill packing peanuts, bubble wrap, and Styrofoam. Anything that was fragile or heavy was packed in excelsior for protection during shipping. Excelsior has been used for years to help in the transport of baby chickens, to wrapping flowers and bulbs , and more recently to aid in controlling erosion on construction projects through the use of excelsior blankets.
While excelsior plants were once spread all across America in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, Winters Excelsior is now on of only 3 companies still manufacturing excelsior today.
Winters Excelsior Company currently operates 2 manufacturing plants. Our original location in McWilliams, AL is still in operation and our newest plant is in Hutchinson, KS. These two locations give us the ability to competitively service a large percentage of the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
